B. Description of our region
The Public High School of Agia Triada is located in an orange tree plain in the municipality of Midea in Argolida prefecture in Peloponnese. In the vicinity of our place there are many archaeological and historical sites, such as Mycenae, Tiryns, the mycenaean citadel of Midea, and the mycenaean cemetery of Dendra, where it has been uncovered the Dendra panoply (or armour), a Mycenaean-era full-body armour made of bronze plates, which is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio.
C. Summary
Our work is aimed at the web display of the archaeological site of Dendra. It is about a mycenaean cemetery in which many chamber tombs and a tholos tomb have been excavated and a wealth of burial offerings have been found, which are dipslayed in the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio.
In collaboration with the archaeologist of the 4th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, Ms. Evagelia Papi, our students visited repeatedly the archaeological site and the part of the Museum of Nafplio dedicated to Dendra, and they have collected a large amount of digital data (videos and photos). Using as narrative text the information displayed in the archaeological site next to the mycenaean tombs with the permission of the author Ms. Papi, we have developed short subtitled videos in Greek and in English. These videos and the photos have been posted in our web site developed for that purpose.
We believe that through the web display of the mycenaean cemetery of Dendra Greek and English speaking people from Greece and abroad will be motivated to come, visit and admire the rich cultural heritage of our land.
D. Problems in the course of our work
We encountered no serious problems during the project, except of course the techological issues we had to solve in order to render and produce the audio-visual material (i.e. voice recording, video rendering, subtitles, site construction, uploading to the school server).
E. Main description of our work - Key elements
Our work was a strong incentive for the students to learn and complete their knowledge on Information Computer Technologies (ICTs), internet and World Wide Web technologies. Using mobile devices (i.e. cell phones) the students captured on videos and photos the archaeological site and they edited this material with the help of suitable software (i.e. Camptasia). Thus, they became more responsible towards the way an information should be displayed on the Internet (i.e. recognition of intellectual property rights, references to the intellectual creator).
The students mostly kept in mind the collaboration climate needed for the achievement of such a very difficult from the technological aspect project. They have collaborated with each other and with the designated entity (i.e the archaeologist Ms. Evagelia Papi).
Digital photo and video cameras, Camptasia software for the video rendering and the subtitles, Dreamweaver CS4 software for the site construction.
The Web visitors of our web-site, Greek and English speakers, they can go around the mycenaean cemetery of Dendra, they can be informed and admire the valuable objects which have been excavated from the tombs and they have been displayed in the archaeological museum of Nafplio. They, also, can find directions to Dendra place and informations about how to visit the archaeological site.
Our work has already been known to the persons of 4th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, with whom we have collaborated. Also, the municipality council of Agia Triada has express its readiness to help.
The archaeologist of the 4th EPKA Ms. Evagelia Papi has steered us towards the proper ways to find informations and to move on with our project.
Apart from the video processing the students start to realize better the worth of their place, whereas until now they did not show particular interest, considering some things as given. The fact that they have become ambassadors of their land it makes them feel proud and more responsible.
